By supplementing a 12-step program with an experienced sponsor, Dr. Anderson can help the addict to identify his/her triggers for abuse of substances, modify other maladaptive behaviors developed during active addiction, and heal personal relationships. Pacing is very important in integrating psychotherapy with 12-step work. In the case of professionals, the disruption often also involves regulatory bodies and boards charged with protection of the public. |
